Happy Birthday Elliott

Looking back at Lucas’ birth, I thought it was quite picture perfect. Yes, I did throw up. Yes, I was starving and by the time I delivered and was brought to my post partum room, the kitchen was closed so the only thing I was able to eat were some stale tacos that my In laws had brought for me. Yes my epidural had worn off so i had to receive an additional dose which ended up being a bit more than needed. And yes, Lucas was born with his cord wrapped around his neck. Even with all of those things, which I consider minimal (except the cord), I still felt that the delivery couldn’t have gone any smoother…. Did I mention that the nurses expected me to be pushing for hrs since he was my first so they had not prepared anything etc.. And to their surprise when asked to give a test push, I was immediately told to stop and my dr was paged (who was home having dinner). In a nutshell, I didn’t think I could top that…then along came Elliott…

For the same reason that we induced Lucas, we decided to induce Elliott. Everything was looking good on the weekly sonos with the exception that the sono on week 38 and 39 showed my fluid levels continuing to drop from 14 to 10 to 8 despite attempts to drown myself with water. So, while I had been trying to resist induction, at my 39 week appointment induction was eminent as my fluid levels were continuing to drop. While Doug and I had come packed and prepared to be admitted, we decided to induce the next day on April 12. Unfortunately, the only time available was at 5am…YUCK!

So we headed home for a few hrs to tie up lose ends with work, etc… We called Gigi to let her know the plans and that we would all spend the night with them that night so that we were closer to the hospital and so that we could leave Lucas there since he would be staying with them while we were in the hospital. Needless to say I could NOT sleep that night and neither could Lucas. He knew something was up…. It was pretty strange. He woke up around midnight crying and just wanted to lay in bed next to me… And I really just wanted to hold him with only a few hrs remaining as my only child…my baby. I was really struggling with the fact that he was no longer going to be the only recipient of my motherly affection. 4 am came really soon. I got up showered and we headed out the door, got checked in, and the pitocin was started at 6:30 am. This time around we did not have our family there with us as Doug’s family was watching Lucas and my mom was busy at work for a few hrs, but trying to get to us as soon as she could. It was strange, but in a way pretty nice for it to just be Doug and Me.

I had a great nurse who was instructed by my Dr that there was to be No test pushing. So she was prepared that this would likely be a fast L & D. Did i mention that we all had bets that this would be a lunch time baby. i was starving and determined to have lunch. The Tools were set up early among other things. When I got to the hospital, I was dilated to about a 3. By 9:30 i asked for the epidural and at that point i was about a 4. By 10:30a I was a 5. Shortly after 11, I was a 6 and Elliott started “acting up” as the nurse said….heart rate dropping, etc… So 5 min after telling me I was a 6 she decided to check me again and I was complete and ready to push. I had let my mom know when I was a 6 and that she had time to get there as I still had some time to go, and well, that was not the case.

I have to mention that the thing I hated most about my epidural with Lucas was that after being re-dosed, I couldn’t Feel a THING. I really hated that. This time around I could feel pressure but no pain….it was perfect. 3 pushes and he was born. He was small like Lucas (contradicting the sono the previous day which had him measuring at 7lb 13oz.

He weighed in at 6lb 4 oz, 19 inches long, born at 39 weeks 1 day.

He was absolutely perfect. The only thing is that he wasn’t drawing deep breaths… He was panting and grunting and it seemed that with the quick delivery, he must have swallowed some fluid on his way out…when a baby is in the canal for a while, the contractions help expel fluid out of the baby, but in this case that didn’t happen. So they put him skin on skin quickly, but told me not to nurse as he just needed to relax and catch his breath so to speak.

Immediately, the nurse brought me a dining menu so that Doug and I could order lunch.HA…. it was no secret how determined I was to eat. So eat we did before even leaving the delivery room….it was so nice ;)

After eating and spending some quiet time with Elliott, we were brought to my post partum room. Delivering early in the day meant we got some time to settle in before night time hit which was so nice. I was preparing for an all nighter with the babe, but as luck would have it, this little guy would sleep all night both nights in the hospital. Dad and I were both pretty happy.

As before, the hospital stay was great. I even noticed that the nurses didn’t quite bug us as often as they had done when we were there with Lucas. Especially on Night 2, they mentioned that they would only come in twice unless I needed something. So we slept….

The way I see it, if my deliveries and babies as a whole continue to be this perfect, we’re going to need more bedrooms b/c I could keep doing this ;)

I’m Back……Hopefully

It’s time to dust off the cob webbs, sweep away the dust, and get back to some blogging. I keep thinking of things to blog about, but never take the time to sit down and “do it”. Ever since I stopped working full-time, I have run out of time to blog. My days are so busy taking care of a toddler, the house, cooking, and working (part-time), that once the day comes to a end, I don’t have enough steam or brain juice left to type out a blog entry.

This effort may be in vain now that #2 will be arriving 3 short months, but alas I will give it a go.

1st Up – Meal Planning Mondays to return

2nd – Time to catch up on my little guy. I have really liked looking back on all of his milestones over the first yr. I would like to have more milestones to reference now that another boy will be following in his footsteps..

Day 2 – Huntsville, AL
We chose to make the short drive to Huntsville to see Doug’s best friend who also happens to be a friend of mine whom I grew up going to school with. He and his family live in Huntsville and have been trying to get us to come visit for a while.

We got on the road around 8:30 and were there by noon. We didn’t make any stops and Lucas did amazing. It was the longest he had ever been in his car seat with out stopping. Such a rock star. Once we got to Huntsville, we grabbed some lunch and then headed over to see our friends. The kids were gone for a couple hours so Lucas got in a quick afternoon nap before they got home.

While we only got to spend one night, we have to agree that Huntsville is beautiful. Far more beautiful than Dallas. We went to dinner with the gang to a favorite of theirs, called Noodles. Basically the entire menu is all dishes with noodles, from Italian, to chinese to Mac and cheese. It was pretty good. Once we got home and put the kids to bed, Bev and I played some cards (sequence)…. One day I will beat you, Bev ;) Then the boys talked about… Religion, politics…pretty much the topic of most of their conversations :) I hate that these two are separated by such a distance…they just feed off of each other when they are in the same room together :)

We finally got to stay up past 8, but by midnight I was about to turn into a pumpkin so we went to sleep. Thanks for letting the Yorks invade your house, we had a great time and hopefully we can invade again on our return trip.

I wanted a pic of all 4 of the kids together, but it looks like at least I got 3 of them…sorry JP. Lucas LOVED his play buddies

I just loved seeing Lucas’ little head while he sat still watching a movie with the big kids. He looked so much older :)

Alisha was the best helper and just didn’t want to say bye. As you can tell by Lucas’ grip, he didn’t want to say bye either

Thank you T’s for letting us come crash your Pad!! We will be back soon!

Day 1 – Memphis

We decided that our first leg would be to Memphis. We packed the car the night before and when we woke up sat morning, we got dressed and walked out the door. Our plan was to wake up Lucas, put him in the car, and get on the road by 7 so that we could get at least and hr down the road before we stopped briefly for breakfast. Lucas ended up waking a bit earlier than we expected, so we went ahead and dressed him before leaving. We got on the road around 7:20 and we drove about 1 1/2 hrs before stopping for breakfast.

Overall we made pretty good time and only stopped twice (breakfast and lunch). Lucas was a rock star. We managed to make our two stops in between each nap. So he napped over 1/2 of the trip and the other half we just looked out the window, played with my iPad, or watched a small part of a movie (cars).

We had planned to stay at the Peabody, a famous, historic hotel in Memphis known for the march of the ducks. If you are not familiar with the story of the Ducks, check out the story here. It’s actually pretty funny. It also worked out that it was about a block away from where Doug wanted to eat dinner, Charles Vergos Rendevous Charcoal Ribs (we had seen it on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives).

We knew the march of the ducks happened at 11am and 5pm so we had planned our arrival time to ensure we saw the 5pm duck walk. We arrived at the hotel around 3:30 And the lobby was packed. That place was pretty busy. While Doug went to check us in, Lucas went to check out the fountain to see the Ducks. Lucas loved the ducks. He wanted to drawl in the fountain with them. Slowly people started to congregate around the fountain as did the Duck Master. I overheard people saying that people start to line up to see the march shortly after 4. I wanted to get our stuff to the room so we left and went upstairs. We also heard from the restaurant to expect a 1 1/2 hr wait on a sat night. After the march we were going to book it across the street to the restaurant.

As we got downstairs and the elevator opened we were met with a wall of people already lined up. We had given up a great spot to go up to our room, but at least we were able to squeeze in near where the ducks would get on the elevator.

The Duck Master spoke about the history of the ducks and then opened the entrance/exit from the fountain and down the walk they came….following the red carpet and onto the elevator. It was pretty cute/fun to watch. As the elevator closed we ran out the nearest exit to head to get some ribs. Now this place is known for its ribs, but the entrance is in an alley…kind of creepy had the sun not been out. We went right in, headed downstairs, and we’re immediately seated. No wait. Thank goodness, b/c if it were going to be an hr, it would not have happened.

Afterwards we headed back to the hotel, gave Lucas a bath, and then put him to sleep. This meant an early bedtime for mom and dad too. Talk about a great excuse to get some extra sleep. Now I don’t know if we were on a special “let’s scream all night down the halls” kind of floor or if it is typical of this hotel since it is just a stones throw from Beale Street, but I’m glad I went to sleep early b/c I didn’t sleep well with people yelling in the halls all night. Thank goodness it didn’t wake up Lucas, but it sure kept me awake. The next morning, we decided to pay back the all nighters as we slammed doors and talked loudly in the halls. Most of the world was asleep as we ventured out to get breakfast. We ended up going down to Beale street which was a ghost town. If you aren’t familiar with Beale Street, it is a much smaller version of Bourbon St.

Then I’m walking in Memphis
Was walking with my feet, ten feet off of Beale

We were actually able to find a place open on Beale street that early although it’s possible it just never closes. We decided to have breakfast at Miss Polly’s Soul City Cafe, food was great especially the Belgium Waffles…YUM YUM YUM!

After Breakfast we headed back to the hotel, packed up the car, and hit the road for Huntsville, AL.

York Family Vacation 2012

Doug and I decided to take a family road trip once we received a wedding invitation to my cousins wedding in Virginia. Of course we could fly, and what fun that is with a 1 yr old who is walking (ie… Never wants to sit still). We started thinking about how much it would cost to fly and rent a car for only a few days and then started thinking about what options we had if we made a road trip out of it. While it cost just a bit more( not much), we would have 1 1/2 weeks of vacation seeing the country side which would be more fun (hopefully).

So we set out to map our journey and we decided that we would do the following:

Day 1 – Drive to Memphis and spend the night
Day 2 – Drive Memphis to Huntsville, AL and stay with friends of ours
Day 3 – 5 – Drive to Asheville, NC and spend a couple of days
Day 5-7 – Drive to Washington, DC
Day 7 -9 – Washington, DC back to Virginia
Day 9 – begin the trip back home (Virginia to Huntsville)

The only road trip Lucas had been on up to the point had been to Fredericksburg for Thanksgiving at 4 months old. I figured he would do pretty well, but I just didn’t know how well.
As the time drew closer we grew more and more excited. I made tons of lists. (we needed clothes, diapers, cups, food/snacks, toys, stroller, and the list goes on). What would go in the bed of the truck vs in the cab with us….). Once we started packing the car for the trip, we were shocked at how much stuff we had….there is just no such thing as traveling lightly with a 1yr old.

I have broken the trip into multiple blog entries….stay tuned!!

And We’re Off!!!

Last week at 13 weeks and 1 week, Lucas decided he was ready to let go of the furniture and start walking. It was an exciting moment although it really hit me how quickly he is growing. He is so much fun and every new milestone is so very exciting. Its time to REALLY childproof now ( especially the toilets… Gross)

Do you have kids? Do you Rhea Lana? Well you should

;

;

Rhea Lana is a twice yearly consignment event selling baby/children’s clothes, toys, carseats, furniture, maternity clothes, etc…. I went this spring for the first time and scored big time with summer clothes for Lucas. One of the local events is going on right now in Frisco. I went wed (the first official day of the sale) and scored yet again with clothes for the winter. I definitely see a trend where I will stock up on clothes twice yearly for the upcoming season. Not only are the prices right, but the brands are good too. Sometimes you will even find clothes with the tags still on.

Rhea Lana has events in many cities around the US. So go see if there is one near you. You’ll be glad you did!
