York Family Vacation 2012

Doug and I decided to take a family road trip once we received a wedding invitation to my cousins wedding in Virginia. Of course we could fly, and what fun that is with a 1 yr old who is walking (ie… Never wants to sit still). We started thinking about how much it would cost to fly and rent a car for only a few days and then started thinking about what options we had if we made a road trip out of it. While it cost just a bit more( not much), we would have 1 1/2 weeks of vacation seeing the country side which would be more fun (hopefully).

So we set out to map our journey and we decided that we would do the following:

Day 1 – Drive to Memphis and spend the night
Day 2 – Drive Memphis to Huntsville, AL and stay with friends of ours
Day 3 – 5 – Drive to Asheville, NC and spend a couple of days
Day 5-7 – Drive to Washington, DC
Day 7 -9 – Washington, DC back to Virginia
Day 9 – begin the trip back home (Virginia to Huntsville)

The only road trip Lucas had been on up to the point had been to Fredericksburg for Thanksgiving at 4 months old. I figured he would do pretty well, but I just didn’t know how well.
As the time drew closer we grew more and more excited. I made tons of lists. (we needed clothes, diapers, cups, food/snacks, toys, stroller, and the list goes on). What would go in the bed of the truck vs in the cab with us….). Once we started packing the car for the trip, we were shocked at how much stuff we had….there is just no such thing as traveling lightly with a 1yr old.

I have broken the trip into multiple blog entries….stay tuned!!
